Borderland Dialogues

Dialogue circles in Estonia on “How can I cope?”

The dialogue circles initiative is taking place in spring 2026 across Estonia for the first time. It is part of a broader cooperation project aimed at promoting a culture of discussion in the region, called ‘Borderland Dialogues‘. People in Finland, Latvia, Norway, Lithuania and Poland are discussing similar topics.

Geopolitical tensions and anxious times require new resilience from all of us. How will you and your community cope in the changed security situation? What gives us strength and courage? What is needed to feel safer and part of society?

As part of this project, the Estonian Dialogue Academy is providing dialogue circles in the English language. We will organise and facilitate these dialogues together with other partners in Estonia. Follow our channels for updates.

Why dialogue?

Crisis situations, hostile neighbours, and a changed security situation have increased anxiety and uncertainty in society. Our coping skills, trust, sense of belonging, and belief in the future have been put to the test.

In times of crisis, it is increasingly important to support people’s mental well-being, social and emotional security, and ability to interact and cooperate with others in order for society to function.

We need better skills to interact with each other in a more respectful manner and find common ground on various issues. A dialogue circle is a safe environment where people can talk to each other in a respectful manner, without judgement, and valuing each person’s unique experience.

Background

The implementation of the dialogue circles is building on the experience of nationwide dialogues organised in Finland.

In Estonia, this initiative is being implemented in by the Estonian Cooperation Assembly in collaboration with the University of Tartu and the Estonian Government Office. We are partner for the English language dialogues.

The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia.
